The Ford Transit is a unique light commercial vehicle that has been produced for more than 48 years and has six generations under its sleeve. Throughout the whole process of evolution, the automobile has been sold as a cargo van, minibus, passenger van, pickup truck, crew cab, just to name a few. Over seven million Transits had been built across four basic platforms that went through a number of various improvements over the years in order to achieve enduring success, though, in the United States, the Ford Transit was first released to the masses only in 2007.
The Ford Transit has been manufactured for four decades, with multiple facelifts and upgrades as well as with a number of parts and accessories added to each new-generation model. The very first Ford Transit (aka Mark 1) was launched in 1965 as a replacement to the Ford Thames 400E. Between 1978 and 1986, the Mark 2 emerged, with its high capacity 3-liter engine offered for ambulance and police vehicles. The Mark 3 and Mark 4 variations were introduced between 1986 and 1991, with minor improvements made to the engine, although the appearance of the vehicle changed significantly: it had a ‘one-box’ design. The Mark 5, introduced between 1994 and 2000, was given a comprehensive facelift to both the body and the engine. Various new parts and systems became available, including central locking, airbags, and electric windows.
The next Ford Transit (Mark 6) unveiled in 2000 was the third all-new design. It took styling hints from the Ford Focus and Ford Ka that featured ‘New Edge’ designs. The major innovation was that the vehicle became available in both rear and front-wheel drive configurations. Seven years later, the Mark 7 Transit won the ‘International Van of the Year’ award. The juries were greatly impressed by the improvements made to the vehicle that was already well recognized as one of Europe’s most popular vans. The powertrains were changed to comply with new emissions legislation; these were first Transits having a five-cylinder engine. To celebrate the Transit's new ‘International’ status, Ford presented their stretch style van – the Transit XXL, one of the most expensive Transits ever. This one-off automobile was built to demonstrate exceptional flexibility and capabilities, featuring specially designed parts and accessories, such as 4 full sliding doors, a fully fitted carpet, floor-to-roof carpeted bulkhead, DVD player and game consoles with individual monitors, etc.
The sixth generation Ford Transit, a full-size van, was officially released at the beginning at the 2013 North American International Auto Show held in Detroit. Scheduled to be introduced to the market as a 2014 model, the all-new Transit (not to be mistaken with a more compact Transit Connect) will feature the turbo-diesel along with several gasoline engine options, including the 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6, all paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and will be offered only with a rear-wheel drive configuration.
When it comes to the appearance, the brand-new Ford Transit is a blend of new and old features; it combines the cab-forward, upright form of a traditional Transit and the sculpted body sides, trapezoidal grille, and angled headlamps of the Transit Custom. The full list of benefits one gets when buying this vehicle is too long to be continued, but what is for sure is that CARiD is always happy to update that list with its comprehensive collection of Ford Transit Parts and Accessories that includes everything from floor mats and chrome accessories to light bulbs and bumper guards.
