The Honda Odyssey was introduced in 1995 and holds the distinction as the Japanese automaker's first minivan. It did not start off offering sliding doors like every other vehicle in its class, so instead the Odyssey was outfitted with four regular "swing" doors. Initially, the vehicle was equipped with a 2.2L inline four-cylinder engine good for approximately 140 horsepower; it was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. It also came with a foldable third row seat. The first generation of the Honda Odyssey was made available in two trim levels: the LX and EX. The LX versions showcased such Honda Odyssey parts as two front bucket seats, a three-seat middle bench that could be removed, and two-seat third row bench (which could be folded flat). The EX featured two second-row captain's chairs (instead of a bench seat), alloy wheels, a power sunroof, remote keyless entry, a roof rack, and a six-speaker stereo system.
In 1999, Honda released the second generation of the Odyssey. Gone was the inline four-cylinder engine and in its place was a more powerful 3.5L V6 capable of 210 horsepower. The engine was directed through a four-speed automatic, although a five-speed would take over a few years later. The previous generation's swinging doors were dropped in favor of the more common sliding rear doors. As for safety features, antilock brakes were made standard for the first time. In 2002, several key updates were made to the minivan. The engine received a boost in horsepower up to 240 and inside the Odyssey, side-curtain airbags became standard and a rear-entertainment system was offered as an option for the EX. Both trim levels (LX and EX) offered seven-passenger seating, although some features varied between the models. The LX offered air conditioning, cruise control, a tilted steering wheel, an AM/FM/CD audio system, and power accessories, all included into the list of standard Honda Odyssey parts. EX variants included traction control, power-sliding doors, automatic climate control, and alloy wheels. Additional options for the Odyssey EX were leather upholstery and navigation.
2005 welcomed in the third generation of the Honda Odyssey. For the third generation, the Odyssey was equipped with a standard 3.5L V6 that pumps out up to 244 horsepower geared to a five-speed automatic transmission. Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) is available on certain trims and increases fuel economy by shutting down three of the engine's cylinders during cruising speeds and when decelerating. Trim levels for this series of the Odyssey are the LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Entry-level LX vehicles show off such standard Odyssey parts as cruise control, stability control, side curtain airbags, a CD stereo, and power accessories. The EX features eight-passenger seating, a power driver's seat, power-sliding doors, a six-CD stereo system, and second-row sunshades. EX-L Odysseys take it a step further with heated leather seats, a sunroof, and a power tailgate. The top-level Touring provides even more amenities and advanced Honda Odyssey parts with a driver-memory seat, power-adjustable pedals, fog lights, parking sensors, a second-row removable center console, a tire-pressure monitoring system, triple-zone climate control, and options such as navigation with Bluetooth and a rear-entertainment system are also available.
Minivans have a habit of just blending in. Sometimes, you can't tell the difference between one and another. They usually look the same, perform the same, and the same type of people drive them. The Honda Odyssey bucks that trend by being a megastar in its class. From its svelte looks to the smooth performance, just riding in an Odyssey can be a pleasure-cruise. Consistent handling, premium seating, and a drastic view of the road ahead all combine to make driving the Honda Odyssey a stylish and enjoyable vehicle that stands alone in its class.
