Maserati is known for giving its drivers a taste for both sports car excitement and luxurious presence with just a twist of exotic flair. Founded in 1914 by six Maserati brothers Carlo, Bindo, Mario, Ettore, Alifieri, and Ernesto, the original goal of the company was to manufacture custom racecars and car parts the family could use in competition. The roaring '20s is when the Maserati name started to make its mark on the racetrack, carrying over the success into the next decade. Maserati was sold in part to Adolfo Orsi, a well-respected Italian businessman in 1937. After the sale, Maserati was moved from Bologna to Modena. More victories throughout the racing circuit followed, including a win at the Indianapolis 500.
Maserati debuted its first road series, the A6, in 1947. The 1.5L inline six-cylinder A6 also gave way to other variants including the A6GCS and the A6G. Come the 1960s, Maserati filled out its lineup with sporty offerings such as the Sebring, a two-door coupe or roadster, and the Mistral Coupe, a descendent of the 3500GT, one of the brand's successful racing-inspired models from the '50s. In 1963, the Quattroporte premiered as Maserati's first four-door. Towards the end of the 1960s, Citroen purchased Maserati, although Orsi stayed on as president. The partnership paid dividends right away, as Maserati was able to roll out the Bora, the marque's first mid-engine car. However, the remainder of the '70s was hard on the automotive industry due to the oil crisis, leaving performance-oriented brands like Maserati struggling to stay afloat. Alejandro de Tomaso bought Maserati in 1975 after Citroen declared bankruptcy. Under Tomaso, Maserati promptly released the Quattroporte III.
As the '80s settled in, Maserati unveiled the Biturbo, a two-door coupe with a 2.0L V6 engine and two turbochargers. In 1988, the Karif rolled off the line. US sales were disappointing though, and by the beginning of the next decade, Maserati stopped exporting cars to America. Fiat took over the brand in 1993 and a few years later, sold off half of it to Ferrari before Maserati's former rival finally wrested full control in 1999. The company turned over once again in 2005, dissolving from Ferrari and partnering with Alfa Romeo under the Fiat banner. Maserati has rebounded with a roster of cars and car parts that are big on both performance and luxury. Now in its fifth generation is the Quattroporte, the automaker's premier four-door luxury tourer. 2007 saw the arrival of the Gran Turismo. Based partly off both the Quattroporte and the Ferrari 599 GTB, the Gran Turismo is a two-door coupe that boasts a V8 engine, six-speed semi-automatic transmission, and an aggressive, aerodynamic body shape.
There are several names that when spoken, command a certain level of acclaim. The kind of name that when you hear it, you immediately understand what the story is all about. Maserati enjoys that level of prestige. Combining racing-inspired parts and a touch of sporty luxury is what the brand is all about.
