As one of Japan's most successful automakers, Mitsubishi has been producing a variety of high quality vehicles for over 35 years. While other Japanese brands are recognized more for efficiency and affordability, Mitsubishi is well-known for bringing a more stylistic approach into the car parts and cars themselves. The first Mitsubishi automobile to make an appearance was the Model A, which premiered in 1917 and holds the distinction of being Japan's first passenger car. However, before Mitsubishi could capitalize on the Model A, the company's resources were moved towards providing transportation and supplies for Japan during WWII. It wasn't until 1960 when the brand would fully recover and offer the Mitsubishi 500, a compact sedan. Joining the 500 were the 360 Pickup truck and the 360 Van. 1970 saw the first Mitsubishi model (the Colt) arrive on American soil.
Chrysler purchased a 15 percent share in Mitsubishi shortly after the Japanese manufacturer premiered in the US. The Colt was offered as a Dodge rather than a Mitsubishi model due to the relative uneasiness and lack of awareness the Mitsubishi name enjoyed. This would be the case for basically the entire decade. The Colt Galant, which premiered in 1969, would wind up becoming one of the most important Mitsubishi vehicles in the history of the company. In 1970, the Galant took on a more American muscle-car flavor called the GTO. Also appearing during this time was the Lancer, a peppy sedan available in a variety of body styles. Mitsubishi stayed successful and by the end of the 70s, the Japanese automaker was averaging over a million cars per year in production. By 1982, the brand was finally able to market vehicles in the US under the Mitsubishi name. The first model was the Tredia, a compact four-door sedan with front-wheel drive. Right on its heels were the Cordia and Starion, two other compacts with the Starion boasting a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Mirage, which first appeared in 1978, also assisted in helping Mitsubishi make its case as a serious foreign competitor.
As the 90s came into view, Mitsubishi began to announce its presence even more. One of the cars largely responsible for Mitsubishi's newfound popularity was the Eclipse. The Eclipse rolled off the line in 1990 as a four-cylinder sports coupe and has since grown into one of the most respected models on the roster. Also on hand was the Mitsubishi 3000GT, which also premiered in 1990. Similar to the Eclipse, the GT (or GTO) featured sportier, more aggressive parts than most traditional Japanese car companies were willing to produce and could be had at a more reasonable cost than its Western European competitors. As the 2000s approached, Mitsubishi spread its influence further with the success of the compact crossover Outlander, the sleek Lancer Evo (Evolution), and the Montero Sport, the brand's midsize SUV entrant.
Mitsubishi has withstood the test of time and it's not by accident. Always in the game, Mitsubishi has shown what it takes to build a core legion of loyal drivers who appreciate precision as much as performance. Each model has its very own key-points that allow their sense of individuality rarely found by other manufacturers. Mitsubishi vehicles are desired and respected for their style, efficiency, and reliability.
